A brighter smile, safely

Teeth whitening

Professional whitening lifts stains from coffee, tea, wine and years of use, and can lighten teeth beyond their natural shade. Done under dental supervision, it is safe for enamel and predictable in its results.

Is whitening right for you?

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, so if you have visible restorations on your front teeth we will talk about that before you start. Sometimes the plan is to whiten first and then replace an old filling to match. Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or for children, and any decay or gum disease should be treated first.

What to expect

  1. An examination and, if needed, a cleaning so the whitening gel reaches the enamel evenly
  2. Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, or an in-office session, depending on your preference and timeline
  3. A whitening gel used at home for a set number of days, or applied in the office with your gums protected
  4. A review to check the result and give you touch-up advice

Sensitivity and side effects

Some people notice temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation during whitening. It settles within a day or two of stopping and can be reduced with a desensitizing toothpaste and by shortening the sessions. Because we examine you first and control the strength of the gel, problems are rare.

How long does it last?

Typically one to three years, depending on diet and habits. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking bring stains back sooner. Occasional touch-ups with your custom trays keep the shade.

Common questions

Questions patients ask

Are the whitening kits from the pharmacy just as good?

Over-the-counter products use weaker gels in one-size trays, so results are milder and the gel can irritate gums. Professional whitening is stronger, fitted to your teeth, and supervised.

Will whitening damage my enamel?

Dentist-supervised whitening does not damage healthy enamel. The temporary sensitivity some people feel is not a sign of harm.
