Check-ups, cleanings and preventive care

Regular examinations and professional cleaning catch small problems while they are still small. It is the least expensive dentistry you will ever have, and the kind we most enjoy providing.

What a check-up includes

A routine visit with Dr. Fadavi and the hygiene team typically includes:

  • A review of your medical history and any medications, because many affect the mouth
  • An examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and bite, and of the jaw joints where indicated
  • An oral cancer screening: a quick, gentle check of the soft tissues; oral cancer is far easier to treat when it is found early
  • X-rays only as often as your risk requires, not on a fixed schedule
  • Time to talk through what we see and answer your questions

Scaling and cleaning

Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar in places a toothbrush cannot reach, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Scaling removes it, which is the main defence against gum disease, the most common reason adults lose teeth. Most patients benefit from cleaning every six months; if your gums bleed or you have had gum disease before, we may suggest more frequent visits.

Fillings

When decay is found early, a filling repairs the tooth in a single visit under freezing. We will show you where the decay is and explain the choice of filling material for that tooth.

Custom sport guards

A custom-made mouth guard fits precisely, stays in place and is far more comfortable than a boil-and-bite guard, so athletes actually wear it. We recommend one for hockey, soccer, basketball, martial arts and any contact sport, for children and adults.

Sealants and fluoride

For children and for adults at higher risk of decay, sealants protect the deep grooves of the back teeth and professionally applied fluoride strengthens enamel. We will tell you whether they are worthwhile for you rather than applying them by default.

Looking after your mouth between visits

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, especially before bed
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
  • Limit sugary and acidic drinks, and avoid sipping them over long periods
  • Tell us about dry mouth, new medications, or changes in your health, since they change your risk

Common questions

Questions patients ask

How often should I see the dentist?

For most people, an examination and cleaning every six months keeps things on track. Some patients need to come more often, others less; we will recommend an interval based on what we find, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

Do I need X-rays every visit?

No. X-rays are taken when they change what we would do, for example to check between teeth, under old fillings or around roots, and the interval depends on your risk of decay and gum disease.

My gums bleed when I floss. Is that normal?

Bleeding usually means the gums are inflamed by plaque, not that flossing is harmful. It often settles within a couple of weeks of daily cleaning, but persistent bleeding should be checked.
