Protecting your teeth while you sleep
Night guards, teeth grinding and TMJ
Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without knowing it, and wake with a sore jaw, headaches or worn, chipped teeth. A custom night guard protects the teeth and often eases the jaw.
Signs you may grind or clench
- Jaw ache, stiffness or clicking, especially in the morning
- Headaches around the temples
- Flattened, chipped or sensitive teeth; cracked fillings
- A partner who hears grinding at night
- Worn patches on the tongue or cheeks
How a night guard helps
A custom night guard is a thin, hard-wearing appliance made from impressions of your teeth. Worn while you sleep, it keeps the upper and lower teeth from grinding against each other, spreads the clenching force, and allows the jaw muscles to relax. Because it is made to fit your mouth exactly, it is far more comfortable and durable than a pharmacy boil-and-bite guard, and it protects crowns, veneers and other dental work you have invested in.
Jaw joint (TMJ) discomfort
The temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull. Pain, clicking or limited opening can come from clenching, stress, an uneven bite, arthritis or injury. At an examination we check the joints and muscles, look at how your teeth meet, and discuss simple measures: a night guard, jaw exercises, softer foods during a flare-up, and adjustments to the bite where appropriate. Persistent or severe symptoms may need referral to another health professional.
Snoring and sleep apnea
Some patients ask about oral appliances for snoring or mild obstructive sleep apnea. These are only appropriate after a sleep study and a physician’s diagnosis; if that applies to you, we can discuss whether a dental appliance is suitable and work alongside your doctor.
Common questions
Questions patients ask
How long does a night guard last?
Usually several years, depending on how heavily you grind. Bring it to your check-ups so we can inspect it for wear.
Will a night guard stop me grinding?
It does not stop the habit, but it protects your teeth from the damage and often reduces muscle soreness. Stress management and sleep habits also play a part.
