Toothache, swelling, broken tooth
Same-day emergency dentist in Scarborough
Dental pain rarely picks a convenient time. Dental Care For You keeps time in the schedule for same-day emergencies, so you can be seen, made comfortable and told exactly what happens next.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Call us the same day if you have any of the following. You do not need to be an existing patient.
- Toothache that keeps you awake, throbs, or gets worse with hot, cold or biting
- Swelling of the gum, face or jaw, or a bad taste that suggests infection
- A fractured, chipped or knocked-loose tooth, including sports and fall injuries
- A crown, bridge, filling or veneer that has come loose or fallen out
- An allergic reaction in the mouth or lips after a dental material or medication
- Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction or injury
Go to a hospital emergency department instead if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, if you have a high fever with facial swelling, or after a serious head or jaw injury. Dental offices are not equipped for those situations.
What we can do on the day
The first goal is to get you out of pain and to understand the cause. Depending on what we find, a same-day visit may include:
- An examination and X-ray of the painful area
- Freezing (local anaesthetic) so you are comfortable while we work
- Draining or treating an infection and, where needed, a prescription for antibiotics
- A temporary or permanent filling, or re-cementing a loose crown or bridge
- Starting root canal therapy to relieve nerve pain and save the tooth
- A regular or surgical extraction when a tooth cannot be saved
If a full repair needs more than one visit, we will make you comfortable first and book the follow-up before you leave.
While you wait to be seen
- Rinse gently with warm salt water; avoid very hot or cold food and drink.
- For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse briefly, and keep it in milk or in your cheek. Time matters: call immediately.
- Keep a lost crown or filling in a clean container and bring it with you.
- Over-the-counter pain relief can help; follow the package directions and tell us what you have taken.
Cost and insurance for emergency visits
We will explain the fee for the emergency examination and any treatment before we begin it, and give you a written estimate for anything that needs a second appointment. Bring your insurance information if you have it.
Common questions
Questions patients ask
Can I walk in without calling?
You are welcome to come in, but calling first means we can prepare and often see you sooner. If you cannot call, come in and we will make every effort to fit you in.
Will the emergency visit fix the problem completely?
Often yes: a filling, a re-cemented crown or a simple extraction can be finished on the day. Some treatments, such as a root canal or a new crown, need a second visit. Either way you leave out of pain with a plan.
What if the pain went away on its own?
Pain that stops can mean the nerve has died rather than the problem being fixed, and infection can follow. Please still book an examination.
